In Memory of Aimee Thurlo

Delores Fossen

1) What's your new book about?

GAGE is book 5 of my 6-book Harlequin Intrigue miniseries, The Lawmen of Silver Creek Ranch. The series features six brothers who are all in some form of law enforcement while also running their family's Texas ranch. So, basically they're cowboy cops--my favorite kind of hero to write. You can't go wrong with a guy in a Stetson, jeans, boots and carrying a Glock.

2) How do you balance your work and your life?

Not easily! I have four kids, travel a lot and do six Intrigues a year. I set up writing time just as I would a regular work day, and I write at least 5 days a week. I also schedule time off in chunks of several weeks or even a month. I need that to help me refuel and come up with new ideas. And to travel, of course!

3) What's your writing process-- do you work from outlines or do you prefer off-the-cuff?

I'm a plotter though I do write the first scene by the seat of my pants after I've "cooked" it in my head. Then, I stop and do a detailed outline that I use to write the rest of the story. That saves me from writing myself into corners.

4) What advice would you give a new writer wanting to break in?

Be persistent. It takes talent, luck and perseverance to make it in this business. I love the old adage--"luck is when opportunity meets preparation."

5) Where do you get your ideas?

Everywhere. Usually the ideas come when I'm working on another project, and something about that particular story, setting or character will spur me to come up with another story idea.

6) Who are your favorite authors?

I love romance, horror and mysteries so I have a wide group of favorites. Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown, Harlan Coben, CJ Box and Lori Wilde. But I'm also a fan of the big Young Adult blockbusters including Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games Trilogy and The Twilight books. (yes, you read that correctly. I am a fan.)

7) Is there anything you'd like to tell your readers?

I love you! Also, thank you for giving me the opportunity to do what I love most--write books.
